Missing: Please Help Us Find Steve Buyer

An announcement of a 4th District-wide "Buyer Alert" was made at 10:00 AM, Monday, August 23, 2004 at the Tippecanoe County Democratic Headquarters, 320 Main Street in Lafayette.

An appeal was made to the public and media to find Congressman Steve Buyer.

David Sanders, a concerned constituent in the 4th Congressional District, who is also the Democratic candidate for U.S. Representative, articulated some of the reasons for apprehension.

"Congressman Buyer has refused to set times for forums to which he has been invited and refused to respond to the National Political Awareness Test (Vote Smart). His staff won’t divulge his whereabouts and let him participate. They are afraid that he will tell more stories about himself that never happened or reiterate his ludicrous suggestion that America use nuclear weapons in Afghanistan and his support for the reinstitution of the military draft. They assume that voters will ignore his record and his disregard for his constituents and make their choice solely on the basis of party affiliation."

"The authorities have informed me that their theory is that Congressman Buyer has been kidnapped by the tobacco industry and Washington lobbyists. A search for Congressman Buyer on a Washington-area golf course where influence-purchasing lobbyists are known to gather is currently underway."

"In this campaign I have participated in candidate forums, posted my positions on the Internet and repeatedly traveled throughout the district listening to voters’ concerns. When I serve in Congress I will never take the voters for granted. The citizens of the 4th District will always see me as their Representative."
